Moonlit Pool

Monday 25th to Wednesday 27th September

An out of this world art installation depicting the moon in stunning detail is set to land in Coventry. Museum of the Moon will be illuminating the city centre with an interesting and unique programme of events planned this September. The special event is part of the Festival of Imagineers a city-wide, week-long celebration of art, design and engineering. Created by Luke Jerram, the fascinating artwork, which measures seven metres in diameter features detailed imagery of the lunar surface from NASA, and will be featured at Coventry Sports and Leisure centre before moving on to Coventry Cathedral.

It will be featured at the Fairfax Street leisure centre from Monday, September 25 to Wednesday, September 27 before moving to Coventry Cathedral on Thursday, September 28 until Saturday, September 30.

The lunar artwork will be suspended over the pool at the leisure centre and a packed programme of events, running from 7am until 11pm, is being planned. Visitors will be able to swim by the light of the moon as well as join in with classes such as aquafit, wave raves and enjoy stunning performances from the Balbir Singh Dance Company, which is free to enter. There is also a Coventry University SU pool party on the Monday evening, followed by an LGBT pool party on the Tuesday night. Visitors can view the moon artwork from the pool viewing gallery for free.

Richard Parker, Coventry Sports and Leisure Centre Manager, said:

“We have a varied and exciting programme as part of our GoSwim initiative, prepared ready for when the moon arrives. “This is going to be an amazing time for staff and visitors to the sports centre and we are thrilled that we could be part of this event. Museum of the Moon is absolutely fascinating and I would urge everyone to come down and enjoy what is certainly going to be a very unique experience. We hope visitors who are not already swimming, will be inspired to take up swimming as a sport."

There will be a small charge for selected events that are taking place at Coventry Sports and Leisure Centre, but entrance to Coventry Cathedral will be free.
